What is a waste audit, and why should you do one?

A Waste Audit is a formal, structured process used to quantify the amount and types of waste being generated by an organization. Information from audits will help identify current waste practices and how they can be improved. Being waste-wise can mean:

  • A more efficient and effective organization
  • Reduced waste management costs
  • Better use of limited natural resources.

Our objectives for a Waste Audit are:

  • To determine composition and quantities of waste being generated
  • To measure effectiveness of existing waste management systems
  • To identify opportunities for improving waste management systems and strategies
  • To collect baseline data for measuring the effectiveness of waste minimization strategies.

So that ultimately we can create:

  • Strategies for waste prevention, re-use and recycling
  • Greener purchasing options to eliminate hazardous, non biodegradable and unnecessary waste generation
  • A waste reduction plan and ways to implement it as easily and effectively as possible

A Waste Audit can also be a great tool for bringing your “green” team together.

Brain Lab will assist in facilitiating, training and monitoring the audit with a group of your employees. A minimum of 5-10 volunteers is needed and with facilities of 300 or more we would need one volunteer per every 40 staff members. Typically waste is collected and stored for an average of 5 days and depending on the size of the company it can take anywhere from 2 hours to 2 or more days to sort, weigh and document. It can be a smelly process but the results are quite eye-opening!
